The Story Behind "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House"

mr blandings dream house

From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting. The Hollyhock House was designed by Frank Llyod Wright for Aline Barnsdall though she quickly became disillusioned with the home and donated it to the city of LA. The hollyhock was Aline’s favorite flower and was used as a theme throughout the house. Even if you cannot tour the home it is visible from the park and the city views are wonderful as well.

Movie and TV Show Houses in Brentwood

This is another home that is still on my to-visit list. Novelist and television writer Patrick Somerville and his wife Alexis had resisted the idea of calling Los Angeles home. For nearly a decade, they kept extending the lease of their Silver Lake rental, thinking that someday soon they’d move back to the Midwest, where they’re both from, and raise their three children there.

Thousands of people went to see this replica in Ohio:

They already spent $13,000 just on the lot and tearing down the old house. Within two years the novel had sold 540,000 copies. The screen rights were sold for $200,000.[1] It was adapted as a film of the same name, released in 1948, which starred Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Melvyn Douglas. Later three radio adaptations were also performed, with Grant in the leading role, followed by a weekly radio series, also starring Grant.

A Cinderella Story House

A few out buildings have also been added behind the house and the rock wall that once lined the front of the house has been replaced with a low red brick wall. The house from Last Man Standing is in the Windsor Square neighborhood and while that is not DTLA I am going to group them together. It is semi-close to The Grove if you want to stop by on a visit over there. The Brady Bunch House has been one of the most exciting homes that I have visited so far. After HGTV did the makeover of the house I was hoping that they might open it up for fans to see. So far though you can only view it from the outside.

This house is picturesque and has a fabulous fairytale vibe to it. Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love. Robinson’s department store when they started living in this mansion. The Derby House was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.

Movie and TV Houses in Pasadena

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was filmed all over the LA area so I have been trying to visit as many filming locations from the movie as I can. Brad Pitt’s character lived in a trailer behind the Van Nuys drive-in theatre, which was actually filmed at the Paramount drive-in since the Van Nuys location no longer exists. While you can go to the drive-in, the trailer is not there. But, you can see Leo’s Character Rick Dalton’s house. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available. You can enjoy the beauty of the homes and the gardens.

Doheny Mansion

It originally appeared as a short story called "Mr. Blandings Builds His Castle" in the April 1946 issue of Fortune magazine. An advertising executive dreams of getting out of the city and building a perfect home in the country, only to find the transition fraught with problems. There is a list printed at the bottom of an advertising page. I think there’s about 60 listed, but it’s just cities, no street addresses.

The roof was simply carried over to form a hood over the door. The Gamble House in Pasadena is one of my favorite homes to visit. It is filled with fascinating details and a tour is well worth your time. I recommend visiting The Gamble House to admire the architecture and history as much as I recommend visiting it as a filming location.

This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person.

You can see my photos of various movies and TV show houses from my visit to the Warner Bros Ranch. The house pictured is where the Heck family lived in The Middle. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle.

It looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Hollywood art director Harry Oliver designed the home. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City.

The area is stunning and has great views of the city too. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. They soon learn that the house is structurally unsound and must be torn down. The Blandings' dream house soon threatens to be the nightmare that undoes them.

This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games. Will Rogers was a popular actor in the early days of Hollywood. In the 1920’s he bought land in Santa Monica and his 359 acres included some land that would later become part of Pacific Palisades. In the 1940s his wife, Betty left their 31 room ranch and the land to the California State Parks.

Written and produced by the team of Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, it was an adaptation of the 1946 novel of the same name written by Eric Hodgins and illustrated by William Steig. If you would like to visit Dunder Mifflin check out this post. This house is first shown in the “Frame Toby” episode and though it looks slightly different than it did in the show it is the actual location.

Just be sure to watch out for the oncoming traffic and you’ll be fine. One of my favorites was Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. It was based on a true story, which was turned into a bestselling book. The 1948 film starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy celebrated leaving city life and spreading out in suburbia. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a 1948 American comedy film directed by H. C. Potter, and starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas.

I have toured the house for free on two different occasions which you can read about here. This is Doc Brown’s house in the Back to the Future trilogy. In the scenes taking place in 1985, the mansion no longer exists and Doc lives in his garage/laboratory which in real life is the carriage house turned giftshop. La La Land is in my top five favorite movies and easily my favorite movie set in Los Angeles, closely followed by Valentine’s Day. I have visited several filming locations from La La Land including Angels Flight, the Smoke House Restaurant, and the Lighthouse Cafe.
